Barnaby Joyce

Much has been said this past week about Barnaby Joyce and his affair with Vikki Campion.  Many people, Barnaby included, say it is a private matter and has nothing to do with the general public, while others say he is a public figure, therefore it is our business.

For what it is worth here is my take on the situation.  Firstly, Barnaby Joyce is the leader of the National Party; the Nationals are a conservative party, even more so than the Liberals.  For many of their supporters, to have someone leading their party who has/is having an extra marital relationship is simply unacceptable.  Many supporters may well withdraw their support for the party which may force the party to re-evaluate their current leader’s position.

Another reason this whole event has become a topic of public interest is simply because during the Same Sex Marriage debate, Barnaby made very strong statements about “Family Values” and the “Sanctity of Marriage”.   It says a lot about the measure of a man, his integrity and even his lack of judgement when his words and his own actions are poles apart.

One more thing to consider, if a person is unable to keep the vows they made to their significant other in a marriage ceremony, can we really expect them to keep promises they make to us while in public office?
